So yeah, I’m late to the party. I can still remember my excitement when I heard that Lisa Kleypas was coming back with her famous historical romances. She’s been and always will be one of my favorite authors. And yet I hadn’t had a chance to pick up her new books. So when I did this past weekend, let me say, it’s all I’ve been reading. I didn’t just buy one. I bought all of the ones I’ve yet to read.
Cold-Hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas does not disappoint. She came back and gave it all in this series the way her fans have known her for. Devon does not want the earldom but he inherits it the moment his infamous cousin dies.
I loved how he’s determined to get rid of everything that comes with the darn title, including the mountains of debt, and how he stops and listens and little by little realizes there is more to it than meets the eye, starting with his cousin’s widow.
West, his brother, is one of my favorite characters. He’s Devon’s sounding board and supports all of Devon’s decisions, even encouraging him to figure out how to sell everything so they can go back to their normal routine. When Devon has a change of heart and decides it might be worth keeping it all, I enjoyed how West presents his argument and despite what he thinks Devon should do, he supports him in his new endeavors.
West and the twins are the funniest characters in this story, and the banter between Devon and Kathleen is just sexy. I love the correspondence between them and their teases between the lines. There were a few chapters dedicated to Helen’s relationship with Mr. Winterborne. I thought that their POV took away the attention from Kathleen and Devon, whose book this is. Despite that, I loved this book!
