In Hard Limit (book 4 in the Hacker series) Erica is over the moon with everything that’s been happening around her ever since she graduated college. Let’s recap:
She got the funding she needed to take her internet startup company up the next level.
She found her dad, who turned out to be a cold blooded politician, who was also the stepdad to the guy that raped her in college.
She fell in love with Blake, formerly a blackhat, and now a millionaire.
In book 4, Erica is engaged to Blake. Erica is still trying to juggle things between her responsibilities at Clozpin, her company, and Daniel’s (her dad’s) demands to help him with his political campaign. I never quite understood his insistence about Erica working in his campaign and how she could make him win. Alli, Erica’s best friend, is the marketing expert not Erica, and so Daniel’s insistence at Erica helping him with his campaign made no sense. How was she going to help when her strength is working with technology?
Erica is presented with an offer she can refuse and she has to decide whether to sell or keep her company. With the support of her friends and co-founders, she decides to sell her company. The only problem is she doesn’t know the new owner is none other than Blake’s ex. When she finds out she walks out on them. She can’t believe how stupid she was not to read the paperwork carefully and signing away the business that cost her many late nights.
She’s also being accosted by reporters because the word is out she’s Daniel’s love child, and now everyone wants an interview. The rumors die down a bit soon after Erica’s shot next to the journalist who wanted her story. At the hospital she’s given bad news about the possibility she won’t be able to have kids. Her wedding to Blake is postponed until she’s well, and Blake invests in the new startup she was interested in as a way to give her something to do now that her old company no longer exists.
The book ends when Blake and Erica are on their way to their honeymoon. James calls looking for a job and some not so good news. I’m willing to bet that book 5 will answer all the questions that remain outstanding, but the end of book 4 isn’t such a great cliffhanger to make me want to find out what happens to them. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Erica ends up pregnant and owning Clozpin again.
